Bekele, PhD, and Yanbin Dong, MD, PhD, both of the Georgia Prevention Institute at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, presented the work on July 27 at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition. To score functional health, the team used the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire, a tool that asks people to rate their own symptoms and physical ability. They focused on two parts of it: symptom burden, and a clinical summary score that averages symptoms and physical function together.

Why a signal like this is plausible
There is a reason not to dismiss the result out of hand. A multivitamin fills small nutrient gaps that get more common with age, and the researchers suggest that better day-to-day functioning could flow through preserved cognition, better blood circulation, and physical stamina. Dong framed a daily multivitamin as a possible “helpful, low-risk addition to a healthy lifestyle to support physical well-being as they age,” while stressing that it “is not a substitute for a good diet or exercise.”
COSMOS itself has produced earlier signals in this direction, including reports that a daily multivitamin might help slow age-related memory decline. So a modest edge in self-reported function fits a pattern the trial has hinted at before.
The limits, stated plainly
This is a secondary analysis of a conference abstract, and that boundary matters. Functional health was not the question COSMOS was designed to answer, and when researchers test many outcomes, some differences turn up by chance. In the authors’ own words, abstracts like this have not gone through the review required for journal publication, so details can still change.
Two more gaps are worth naming. The outcome was self-reported: participants rated their own symptoms and abilities rather than being timed on a walk or measured for grip strength, and people who suspect they are on an active supplement can report feeling better. And the size of the benefit was not disclosed. “Significantly better” means statistically significant, which in a group this large can be triggered by a small average change. Whether that change is big enough for a person to actually feel is a separate question the abstract did not answer.
What to watch next
The useful next step is the full peer-reviewed publication, with the actual effect size and, ideally, functional health measured objectively rather than by questionnaire. That is what would move this from an interesting hint to something a clinician could lean on.
Until then, the practical guidance is unchanged. If you are over 60 and already take a multivitamin, this is mild reassurance, not a reason to change anything. It is not strong enough on its own to start one, especially with the effect size unknown and the data unpublished. The larger levers for staying functional with age are the ones the researchers pointed back to: a decent diet, regular movement, and managing chronic conditions. Anyone weighing a new supplement, particularly people on prescription medications, should run it past their own clinician first.
