These findings offer a detailed map of behavioral genetics, but they do not mean human character is fixed at birth. Genes are not destiny.
First, environment remains a major factor in human development. Genetic predispositions often influence the choices people make, such as choosing where to live or what career to pursue, but those choices are continuously shaped by life events, culture, education, and personal effort.
Second, the individual effect of any single gene variant is minuscule. A person carrying a handful of variants associated with extraversion or neuroticism will not necessarily display those traits strongly. The predictive power emerges only when aggregating hundreds or thousands of tiny genetic signals across the genome.
Finally, while the paper combined data from 46 cohorts, the news coverage did not specify the total number of individual study subjects across those cohorts, nor did it report exact percentage increases in hospital stay durations or income levels. The current evidence establishes broad statistical links rather than deterministic diagnostic rules for any single patient.
