The headline everyone wants, and the sentence that ruins it
Here is the finding people will share: adults who drank more coffee had less body fat and more muscle than lighter drinkers, even when their BMI was the same. Same weight for height, different body underneath. That is a genuinely interesting result.
And here is the sentence that has to ride along with it. The study cannot tell you coffee did that. Not “probably did,” not “likely.” It is built in a way that makes cause impossible to claim, and the researchers are the first to say so.
Both things are true at once, so let me walk through what was actually measured before anyone reaches for a fifth cup.

What the researchers looked at
The work comes from the University of Oulu in Finland, published in the European Journal of Nutrition in July 2026. It draws on the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, a long-running group of people all born in the same region in the same year. The researchers analysed 2,264 of them, all aged 46 at the time of measurement.
That design has a real strength. Everyone is the same age and from the same place, which quietly removes two big sources of noise. It also has a hard limit baked in, and that limit is the whole story here.
It is observational. Nobody was assigned to drink coffee or avoid it. The team simply recorded how much coffee people already drank and compared their bodies and blood. When you do that, you can find a pattern, but you can never be sure the coffee made the pattern rather than the kind of person who drinks a lot of coffee.
The body-composition part
At matched BMI, the heavier coffee drinkers carried less total fat, less visceral fat specifically, and more skeletal muscle. Visceral fat is the deep fat packed around the organs, the kind most tied to metabolic trouble, so less of it is the good direction.
The blood work pointed the same way. Heavier drinkers had lower levels of branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs. When BCAAs stay high in the blood over time, they have been linked to insulin resistance and a higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Lower here is, again, the healthier reading.
So the metabolic picture is consistent: leaner where it counts, more muscle, and a blood marker sitting on the better side. Consistent is not the same as caused, but it is more than a fluke in one measure.
If more muscle is what you are actually after, the levers with real causal evidence sit elsewhere. Training and protein do the heavy lifting, some research even ties a gut microbe to stronger grip in older adults, and on the supplement side the evidence for collagen and muscle strength is mixed at best. Coffee, on this data, is a bystander worth noticing, not a cause worth chasing.
The hormone twist
This is the part the researchers found most striking, and it split by sex.

The lead researcher, doctoral researcher Luca Verroest, put the surprise plainly: “Coffee is consumed by millions of people every day, yet we still know surprisingly little about how it relates to our metabolism and hormones.” The team’s point was that this hormonal fingerprint did not vanish once they accounted for body weight and habits, and that several of the links ran in opposite directions for men and women.
Why would total testosterone go up in men while free testosterone edges down? SHBG is the likely lever. More binding protein means more of the hormone is held in reserve rather than floating free. The study spotted the pattern. It did not explain the mechanism, and it is careful not to pretend otherwise.
Why “at the same BMI” is the interesting bit
Most diet-and-body stories quietly lean on weight. Eat X, weigh less. This one holds weight constant and finds a difference anyway. Two people at 46 with the same BMI, and the heavier coffee drinker tends to have swapped some fat for muscle and shed some of the visceral kind.
That is a more useful signal than a scale number, because body composition, not BMI, is what tracks with metabolic risk. It is also exactly the kind of finding that gets oversold. The gap between “coffee drinkers looked like this” and “coffee will do this to you” is the entire caveat, and it does not close just because the result is tidy.
What the study genuinely cannot tell you
Worth being blunt about the holes, because they are load-bearing.
- No cause. Observational means association only. Reverse causation is live: maybe leaner, more active people simply drink more coffee, not the other way around.
- No cup number from the source. The University of Oulu release grouped people by intake rather than naming a threshold. The “five or more cups” figure floating in coverage is secondary, not a target the researchers set.
- No compound named. The study did not separate caffeine from the hundreds of other compounds in coffee, and did not compare filter against instant. So even if coffee is doing something, this cannot say what part.
- One age, one country. Everyone was 46 and Finnish. That tightens the comparison but narrows how far the result travels to other ages and populations.
The authors themselves say more research is needed before any of this informs dietary advice. That is not throat-clearing. It is the correct read.
So what do you actually do with it
Not much, honestly, and that is fine.
- If you already drink coffee and enjoy it, keep going. Nothing here is a reason to cut back, and the associations lean healthy.
- Do not add cups as a body-composition hack. The study does not support it, and piling on caffeine has real costs: wrecked sleep, jitters, and problems for some heart rhythms and anxiety conditions.
- Watch what goes in the cup. A metabolically hopeful signal from black coffee says nothing good about a large drink loaded with syrup and cream. The additions are usually where the harm hides.
- Treat it as a lead, not a result. This is a well-built observational snapshot that earns a proper trial, not a finished answer.
The useful version is small. Heavier coffee drinkers in this Finnish group looked metabolically better under the hood at the same BMI, with an odd hormone pattern nobody can yet explain. Interesting enough to study harder. Not enough to change what you brew tomorrow.
